US stock benchmarks ended the session in positive territory, though the advance was heavily concentrated in technology. Shares tied to artificial intelligence and semiconductors extended their recent outperformance, lifting the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 by over 1% each. The small-cap Russell 2000 also participated in the upturn, whereas the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed only a slight 16-point gain.

Among the Magnificent 7 group, Tesla posted the largest gain, climbing 4.04%, with Amazon close behind. In contrast, Microsoft and Meta finished in the red. Meta's drop came with a negative technical signal as the stock slipped beneath its 100-day and 200-day moving averages and closed near the day's low.

Focus now shifts to a fresh batch of earnings reports. Alphabet and Microsoft will report after the close tomorrow, while Amazon announces its results after Thursday's close.

The session's final figures

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 16.00 points, a gain of 0.03%, to end at 52,383.23.

  • The S&P 500 added 45.90 points, or 0.60%, closing at 7,722.67.

  • The Nasdaq Composite climbed 308.43 points, up 1.18%, to 26,477.81.

  • The Russell 2000 advanced 32.4479 points, or 1.16%, to 2,818.8718.

  • The Nasdaq 100 gained 378.04 points, or 1.29%, finishing at 29,651.44.

Artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks continued to lead the market.

The most notable advances on the provided watchlist spanned areas such as AI infrastructure, chips, networking, storage, and power. It was not merely a surge among the biggest tech companies. A number of smaller-capitalization stocks posted increases far exceeding the overall market.

Several stocks that had recently come under selling pressure rebounded sharply in the session. Among them:

  • Nebius climbed 11.22% to end at $170.47.

  • Credo Technology rose 10.77%, closing at $167.43.

  • Astera Labs advanced 10.47% to $286.69.

  • CoreWeave added 7.94%, finishing at $59.57.

  • Bloom Energy gained 7.15% to reach $218.50.

  • Western Digital moved up 6.95% to $380.88.

  • Coherent increased 6.45%, ending at $239.75.

  • Lumentum rose 5.88% to $866.18.

  • Arista Networks advanced 5.51% to $187.00.

  • AMD added 5.45%, closing at $560.26.

The magnitude of these gains highlights where buying interest was strongest. Nvidia also advanced, but its 0.90% rise was tame relative to the bigger jumps seen among other names in the sector.

Tesla and Amazon topped the Magnificent 7 performance.

Tesla added 4.04%, closing at $407.46, easily outpacing its Magnificent 7 peers. Amazon was next with a 1.61% rise to $253.10 as investors awaited its earnings due Thursday.

Alphabet also moved higher in front of its own earnings due tomorrow, while Microsoft edged down slightly. The full list of Magnificent 7 stock changes was as follows:

  • Tesla: up 4.04%, finishing at $407.46.

  • Amazon: up 1.61%, closing at $253.10.

  • Alphabet: up 1.19%, ending at $320.58.

  • Apple: up 0.93%, to $347.10.

  • Nvidia: up 0.90%, closing at $217.94.

  • Microsoft: down 0.22%, ending at $531.44.

  • Meta: down 1.64%, to $620.19.

Five of the seven stocks ended in positive territory, yet the split remains noteworthy. Investors kept favoring specific tech names even as others lagged despite a strong advance in the Nasdaq.

Sellers tighten grip on Meta shares.

Meta was the worst performer in the group, dropping $10.37 and settling near the day's trough. From a technical standpoint, the stock fell beneath its 100-day and 200-day moving averages, a more significant development.

This puts the onus on buyers. To repair the technical outlook, they must drive the stock back above those averages and sustain it. Until they succeed, the breached levels may act as resistance on any rebound.

A rapid bounce could suggest the breakdown was false. Persistently trading below both moving averages would solidify the bearish view. Ending near the session's low fuels worry, since buyers failed to mount a significant recovery by the close.

Trading takeaway: Watch each stock's own signals.

A climbing Nasdaq can offer a favorable environment, but every stock must still demonstrate its own bullish lean. Meta's decline on a day when technology broadly rallied serves as a valuable reminder.

Moving averages assist traders in drawing that distinction. After a price falls beneath a key moving average, the key is whether it can bounce back and hold above it. This provides a concrete gauge for assessing control and defining risk.

In Meta's case, sellers have acted. Buyers must now step up.
