Alphabet's GOOGL shares are trading under the 200-day moving average by the biggest gap in 17 months, according to Barchart. Concern over AI expenditure drove the stock to around $317 as the company prepares to report third-quarter results on Wednesday.

Wall Street holds a contrasting view. Of 13 analysts monitored by Visible Alpha, 12 rate GOOGL as a buy. The consensus price target of $433 stands 35% above the closing price on Friday.

Reasons a Strong Quarter Might Not Boost Alphabet Stock

Analysts project third-quarter revenue of approximately $127.9 billion, up about 25% from a year earlier. Google Cloud revenue is expected to almost double to $29.15 billion.

July provides a cautionary precedent. Following second-quarter results, the stock declined 7.1% after adjusted EPS came in $0.04 short of estimates.

Alphabet also raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion. Subsequently, free cash flow went negative for the first time since the company's IPO in 2004.

This dynamic turns Big Tech earnings week into a critical test. Options markets imply a roughly 6% price swing in either direction by Friday, exceeding the stock's typical post-earnings move of 5.2%.

“The Cloud question is how much of the $514 billion backlog converts as capacity arrives.”

Dan Ives, who serves as global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, has an Outperform rating on the stock.

Where Might Alphabet Stock Stabilize After the Breakdown?

Looking at the weekly chart, GOOGL has fallen beneath a symmetrical triangle that started forming after May's record high of $408.

The initial downside objective is the 0.382 Fibonacci retracement at $306. Beneath that, the 0.5 retracement stands around $275.

According to the pattern's measured move, the stock could reach $221, roughly 30% below the current price. This level falls between the 0.618 retracement at $243 and the 200-week moving average close to $200.

Additionally, the weekly Relative Strength Index has breached a support trendline that had held since April 2025.

“The bears have the technical advantage, but a swift recovery of support could quickly change that narrative.”

This assessment comes from Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets. He noted that recapturing the $331 to $345 range would undermine the bearish outlook.

Microsoft and Amazon are also scheduled to report earnings this week. Investors have already been penalizing both capex reductions and increases, meaning Alphabet's results could influence the direction of the AI trade.
