Binance confirms $6.3B hack impact as bitcoin slides to $76,300
Binance confirmed a security breach with an estimated $6.3 billion impact, and bitcoin briefly fell to $76,301 before trading near $77,800.
Bitcoin tops the S&P 500 on most recent trading days but stays stuck below $85,000 as ETF demand fades and supply from long-term holders weighs.
On a growing number of trading days in recent weeks, Bitcoin has outperformed the S&P 500. Despite this relative strength, the cryptocurrency has consistently failed to settle above the $85,000 mark and has lately faced difficulty staying above $80,000.
According to on-chain metrics, a dozen forces are at play, ranging from declining exchange-traded fund (ETF) interest to elevated distribution from long-dated holders.
Relative strength is a gauge of how one asset stacks up against another over an identical timeframe. During June, Bitcoin outperformed the S&P 500 on only a fifth of trading days, marking its weakest run in more than half a decade.
Come October, Bitcoin is notching up more winning trading sessions against equities than losing ones. Should market participants continue shifting toward the stronger asset, the pattern may become self-perpetuating.
Even so, the asset encounters resistance when attempting to advance. Its high came on September 23 at $87,100, yet from January onward the cryptocurrency has recorded just five daily closes north of $85,000.
Glassnode's analysis groups the obstacles into three overarching categories: demand, supply, and overall market mood.
From a demand perspective, capital moving into ETFs has largely flattened. The bulk of the $653 million that came in on October 19 has since exited the products. On Binance, bids have similarly retreated, settling in the $78,000–$79,000 range.
Turning to supply, long-term investors hold roughly 4 million BTC acquired within the $85,000–$118,000 bracket. A predisposition among many to sell around the break-even point accounts for the persistent ceiling around $84,000–$85,000 that inhibits upward breakthroughs. Additionally, the price dipped marginally beneath the ETF cost basis of approximately $81,500.
The wider economic environment stays tepid as well. Economic expansion has slowed, consumer morale is close to its weakest point since the aftermath of 2009, and Bitcoin's bounce back has yet to match its 2023 recovery. Speculative participants are leaning toward equities, and the range of altcoins is narrowing.
Nevertheless, preliminary indicators of steadiness are appearing. Price volatility has tightened back to the levels seen in 2023, drawdowns on successive slides are diminishing, and addresses containing 100 to 1,000 BTC persist in accumulating.
On October 28, the Federal Reserve opted to maintain borrowing costs, following an increase of 25 basis points the previous month.
Market watchers had pointed to the rate decision as a potential catalyst, observing that the preceding two volatility troughs preceded abrupt price swings by several days.
$90,000–95,000 for #Bitcoin this quarter is still on the cards.

I was expecting to see a retest at $80,000, this hasn't happened today through FOMC.

Presently, Bitcoin's superior showing relative to equities has not culminated in a clear upward breakout.
