Bitcoin sellers miss their break; buyers face a resistance test

Bitcoin sellers failed to sustain a break below the 100 day moving average, leaving support intact and putting buyers to the test at hourly resistance.

Sellers were unable to force a downside break

Bitcoin sellers got a chance to seize more control. The price reached its 100 day moving average - and on today's session even slipped under it - on Friday, Monday and again today; that average sits at $76,654. Those breaches created an opening for a decline toward $76,052, the 38.2% retracement of the rally from the July low, and toward the swing area that runs down to $74,925.

For sellers to push the decline further, those were the levels they needed to reach and then clear.

They did not manage it.

A break beneath the 38.2% retracement did not hold, and the swing area that has drawn both buyers and sellers since August remained intact. Sellers did dip below the 100 day MA today for a short time, yet they were unable to convert that breach into a lasting decline.

That letdown gives buyers grounds to defend support, set their risk and drive prices back up. That is exactly what they did today.

Buyers have an opening, yet follow-through is required

The buyers now have their turn. Still, defending support is only half the task. They must also clear resistance to make progress to the upside.

The first gauge on the upside is the 100 hour moving average, close to $77,408. With the price reaching $77,736, buyers are probing that level. A move above it is one step; holding above it and gaining momentum is the next.

Beyond that, the declining 200 hour moving average sits near $78,730. It is the next important hurdle, with resistance around $79,146 - the prior lows - after that.

If buyers clear those levels and remain above them, they would regain more control. The next target on the upside would then be near $81,930.

Without those breaks, the rebound is still a recovery inside the recent decline. Buyers have their chance, but they must show they can make more of it than sellers did with theirs.

What could hand sellers another opening?

Sellers stay in the game if the rebound runs out of steam at the hourly moving averages.

A drop back under the 100 day MA at $76,656 would undermine the buyers' advance and bring the $76,052 retracement back into focus. Under that, the lower boundary of the swing area near $74,925 is the next important target.

A lasting break below that zone would provide the follow-through sellers have yet to produce. It would also open the way toward the 200 day moving average near $73,158 and the 50% midpoint at $72,554.

At this point, though, the support level has held. Attention turns to whether buyers can convert that successful defense into a break of resistance.

Education: Failed breaks create openings, not certainties

Traders watch for momentum in the direction of a break when price clears a key technical level. Should that momentum fail to appear and price move back through the level, the failure itself carries information.

Here, sellers pushed under the 100 day MA but could not clear the retracement and swing support beneath it. That shows buyers were prepared to step in at a defined area.

The next test is whether those buyers can overcome resistance. Support sets the risk. The hourly moving averages gauge their progress. A rise above those averages reinforces the bullish bias; a rejection hands sellers another chance.

The lesson is to wait for price action to confirm the shift. A failed downside break gives buyers an opening, but only moving above resistance and staying there turns that opening into greater control.
