Flávio Bolsonaro is reportedly heading to the US after losing Brazil's presidential runoff, as his passport was cancelled amid criminal investigations.
Allies cited by Folha de S.Paulo say Flávio Bolsonaro is traveling to the United States. This follows his loss to Lula in the presidential runoff two days earlier, and a Supreme Court order to hand over his passports as part of criminal probes. Brazilian authorities subsequently revoked his Brazilian passport.
According to allies, he departed via Argentina. The route and his present whereabouts have not been verified, so caution is advised until an official statement is released.
If the report is correct, this is more than a losing candidate leaving. A runner-up under investigation, traveling without a valid passport, would arrive in a nation whose president openly supported him. The family already has a base there. His brother Eduardo told Reuters he obtained permanent US residency and has lived in the US since February 2025. Flávio met Trump in the Oval Office in May. Brasília also turned down visa applications from two US diplomats this summer after detecting a possible connection between Flávio’s criticism of voting machines and the Trump administration.
Thus, the scenario involves a potential extradition battle, Washington possibly viewing him as a political exile, and already tense US-Brazil relations nearing a difficult period just as Lula begins a new term. Trump would almost certainly grant him asylum, but it could be more complicated under a later administration. The outcome may also depend on the charges: money laundering and illegal transfers abroad.
From a markets perspective, this is not yet a Brazilian real story. The election result already provides enough for the currency to absorb, and the challenger’s departure is as definitive a conclusion as possible. It does raise uncertainties about the Bolsonaro movement’s future, but effectively terminates it. His father Jair remains under house arrest.
The risk lies in the bilateral relationship. If this leads to tariff threats, sanctions on Brazilian officials, or a trade dispute, that is the channel through which Brazilian assets could be affected. Any statement from the White House or State Department should be monitored.
