Central bank decisions loom this week as traders eye potential surprises

RBNZ, BOC, Fed, ECB, BOJ meetings this week; rate decisions widely expected but guidance key.

This week sees a series of key central bank meetings, with five major institutions set to unveil their latest policy moves. Following recent fluctuations in oil prices, bond yields, and equities, the focus now shifts back to monetary authorities.

The RBNZ, BOC, Fed, ECB, and BOJ are all scheduled to announce decisions in the coming days. Based on current market pricing, traders appear to have a clear view of the likely outcomes. The main uncertainty now is whether any unexpected moves will occur.

On Wednesday, the RBNZ begins the week, with markets fully anticipating a 25 basis point rate increase. While the decision appears a foregone conclusion, attention will be on any signals about further tightening at the December meeting.

Later on Wednesday, the BOC meets, with markets assigning approximately 83% probability of a 25 bps rate hike. This indicates solid expectations, though the potential for a surprise remains. Barring any unexpected developments, the central bank is likely to meet forecasts. The more important issue may be whether additional tightening is required as policymakers combat inflation. That factor will be crucial for the Canadian dollar's response.

The Fed concludes Wednesday's proceedings, with traders giving roughly 91% odds that interest rates will remain unchanged. The decision itself is not expected to be the main focus. Instead, attention will centre on Federal Reserve Chair Warsh's press conference. His commentary will be examined closely, particularly as higher oil prices complicate inflation dynamics and recent equity market declines fuel growth worries.

On Thursday, the ECB takes over, with markets pricing in around 90% odds of no change. However, as energy-driven inflation rises and European growth falters, ECB President Lagarde faces a busy press conference. Specifically, traders will seek indications about December, where anticipation of another rate increase has been growing.

The BOJ wraps up the week on Friday, with traders assigning approximately 98% odds of unchanged rates. Yet, with the yen remaining under pressure and core inflation near 2%, the key question is whether policymakers will provide stronger hints about a possible December adjustment. BOJ Governor Ueda's press conference is expected to avoid any forward guidance, so the risk event may be limited.

Overall, the rate decisions themselves are unlikely to generate significant market movement. As history shows, it is typically the forward guidance from central bankers that drives market reactions. Therefore, the press conferences and any signals about future policy will be the primary focus.
