Crude oil futures experienced a sharp sell-off as traders reacted to remarks by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer about ending the war with Iran.

Schumer stated that Democrats intend to take steps to conclude the conflict, with some Republicans also supporting the effort. He further noted that the American public does not support the war, does not grasp its rationale, and desires its conclusion. The possibility of legislative action is pressuring crude oil prices as traders reconsider the risk premium associated with the conflict and possible supply interruptions.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is under growing scrutiny. According to CBS News, President Trump has queried his advisors about whether Hegseth should stay on after the Republican Party's losses in Tuesday's elections. The White House, however, stated that Trump retains "complete confidence" in his defense secretary, and CBS reported that no move to replace him has been finalized. With Democrats holding power, impeachment proceedings against Hegseth could be initiated.

Sellers are currently in command. Will they maintain that control?

Crude oil now stands at $88.57, a drop of roughly 8.1%. It has declined from a session peak of $97.15 to a trough of $88.26, representing a $8.89 range from top to bottom.

At the current level, oil sits only $0.31 above its session low. This maintains near-term downward pressure. Buyers have not managed to push the price significantly away from that low.

The $88.26 mark serves as the immediate downside benchmark. A drop below that point, accompanied by consistent trading beneath it, would keep sellers dominant.

From a technical perspective, the price is nearing a key convergence area that includes the 50% retracement of the rally from the July low at $86.93, as well as the 100-day moving average at $86.81 and the 200-day moving average at $86.66. These three levels will serve as an important gauge for both buyers and sellers. If the price moves below and remains under that zone, further downside could follow. If it holds above, a bounce-back rally cannot be ruled out. Ultimately, the key question remains whether the war can end, whether an agreement can be reached, and whether peace can be achieved. Crude oil traded at $67 just before the war began. There is room for further decline, but the outcome hinges on peace prospects and their nature.
