Dollar Mixed, Oil Volatile as Conflicting Headlines Dominate Iran Talks

The dollar moved in mixed directions as crude oil fluctuated in response to contradictory reports surrounding US-Iran negotiations.

Wednesday's session begins with a recurring source of uncertainty. Although the US and Iran are said to be still in discussions, the headlines are pushing trading in varying directions.

The price of crude climbed past $100 and then slipped back under that level. Yields on Treasuries are down a touch, indices for stocks indicate a stronger start, and the dollar shows a divided picture. A lot is happening across markets, though no single signal ties it together.

Oil and the Middle East: Talks Do Not Equal a Final Pact

As of 7:30 AM Eastern, crude was changing hands at $98.66, representing an increase of $0.80 from the previous close. Its peak hit $100.40, while the bottom end stretched to $97.91. The spread comes in at $2.49; although the commodity price has fallen well back from the early peak, it remains up for the session.

An initial wave of optimism on Tuesday was sparked by reports that a compromise plan had been put forward by Qatar and Pakistan, tackling points raised by both Washington and Tehran, notably a facet connected to Tehran's frozen holdings. Crude declined as a deal appeared closer, but the move was then undone when a diplomat close to the discussions countered the notion that an accord was near.

A piece by Giuseppe Dellamotta breaks down the competing forces at play: a resolution could lower the premium on supply risks, whereas an ongoing standoff would keep that risk alive.

The most recent items highlight the prevailing doubt:

  • Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi notes that indirect talks continue via intermediary nations, such as Pakistan and Qatar.

  • Araghchi adds that Iran's offer entails reopening the Strait of Hormuz if the US meets its side of the bargain. These are presented as Iran's conditions, not a confirmation of an agreement to reopen.

  • The Iranian president remarks that dialogue cannot happen while a blockade and threats are in place.

  • A separate story, relayed by Al Hadath, states that Iran turned down American requests brought through Pakistan.

  • President Trump remarks that the US is doing "very well" with Iran, though he indicates that a definitive choice remains concerning how he prefers to conclude the military campaign.

The conflict involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis continues as another factor in supply worries. An advance in US-Iran talks would be major, but market participants should keep an eye on whether this separate struggle cools down.

The differences are crucial for traders. A proposal marks one stage. An accord marks another. Execution marks yet another. The market's price moves have to show which phase traders believe has genuinely been hit.

US Dollar Posts Mixed Performance

During the 7:30 AM ET check-in, the dollar had nudged up against the euro, the Swiss franc and the Canadian dollar, while slipping versus the pound sterling, the yen, the Australian dollar and the New Zealand dollar.

  • Against the CAD: roughly 0.07% in the green.

  • Against the CHF: roughly 0.06% firmer.

  • Against the EUR: roughly 0.04% stronger.

  • Against the NZD: roughly 0.09% weaker.

  • Against the GBP: roughly 0.12% lower.

  • Against the JPY: roughly 0.15% down.

  • Against the AUD: roughly 0.40% down.

The Australian dollar stands out as the best performer. RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser stated that the bank's monetary approach is operating effectively, but that the inflation picture has worsened and looks less favorable than projected. He further suggested that quarterly trimmed-mean inflation is expected to top existing forecasts.

Those statements highlight the ongoing inflation concerns. However, Hauser added that the central bank is still completing its outlooks and that the upcoming board's choice is not yet clear.

Currency Ranges: Most Major Pairs Still Have Room

A gauge of the 22-day average range, which tracks roughly a month's worth of trade, points to fairly restrained movement across the main currency combinations:

  • EURUSD: 24 pips relative to a 66-pip standard β€” roughly 36% of the ordinary span.

  • GBPUSD: 37 pips relative to a 75-pip standard β€” roughly 49%.

  • USDJPY: 50 pips relative to a 93-pip standard β€” roughly 54%.

  • USDCHF: 23 pips relative to a 52-pip standard β€” roughly 44%.

  • USDCAD: 29 pips relative to a 63-pip standard β€” roughly 46%.

  • AUDUSD: 41 pips relative to a 49-pip standard β€” roughly 84%.

  • NZDUSD: 22 pips relative to a 43-pip standard β€” roughly 51%.

The euro-dollar pair has consumed the smallest portion of its standard daily band and thus holds the most relative space to move. In contrast, the Australian dollar combination has already eaten up a far larger amount of its typical scope following its big gains.

That said, it is not guaranteed that EURUSD will run another 42 pips, nor that AUDUSD cannot advance further. The average is just a guide. Direction must still be determined by the price activity, a breach of a technical level or the next trigger. But it is worth watching closely.

US Stock Futures Signal a Higher Start

Futures contracts for US equities are indicating advances when trade begins: the Dow industrial average is showing an 89-point climb, the S&P 500 an 18-point rise, and the Nasdaq 100 a 168-point gain.

European equity markets are mostly rising too: Germany's DAX has gained 0.71%, France's CAC 0.60%, the UK's FTSE 100 is flat at 0.01%, Spain's Ibex is up 0.57%, and Italy's FTSE MIB has climbed 0.62%.

The British market is trailing the increases seen on the rest of the continent.

Treasury Yields Drift Slightly Lower

Yields on US government debt are down by a small degree throughout the major terms: the two-year instrument stands at 4.7804%, lower by 0.66 basis points; the five-year at 4.9272%, lower by 0.68; the 10-year at 5.1086%, down 0.84; and the 30-year at 5.4199%, off by 0.51.

The moves are not large, but the downward path provides buyers of the greenback with less assistance from the yield market at this point.

In other markets, the gold price sits near $4,132, higher by around 0.17%. Silver trades close to $57.63, dropping roughly 0.60%, and Bitcoin is around $83,441, advancing by about 0.60%.

The Immediate Outlook Ahead

Today's US economic calendar carries relatively few planned reports, which makes the market even more responsive to events in the Middle East.

Thursday will bring the newest US jobless claims numbers, with the flash PMI reports arriving on Friday. The claims data will serve as an extra gauge of the employment situation, and the PMIs can help market players measure corporate activity and cost pressures.

Until then, a single fresh headline could alter the atmosphere swiftly. The pragmatic strategy is to be familiar with the price points before that new report comes across the wire.
