ECB leaves tightening option on the table. EURUSD bounces from break below 1.11135

ECB holds steady, hawkish tone preserved for next meeting. EURUSD moves under 1.11135 floor before bouncing back.

The ECB held its benchmark rates steady, a widely forecast outcome. President Christine Lagarde, however, adopted a firm tone even with the decision to pause. ECB officials debated a potential rate rise, with Lagarde suggesting that the economic circumstances might have supported a further tightening of monetary policy. The institution’s choice to stand pat, she indicated, stemmed from persistently elevated underlying inflation and an uncertain forecast, rather than signaling the completion of the tightening period.

In the EURUSD market, the decision and accompanying press conference fueled choppy conditions. The exchange rate first moved lower, falling underneath the double-bottom area around 1.11135, a level first forged on October 14 and touched again in the prior session. The bearish momentum did not last. The pair bottomed out at 1.1106 before reversing direction and ascending back towards the 1.1155 region.

The bounce placed the EURUSD rate inside a well-known trading zone, positioned just beneath the descending 100-hour moving average. The inability of sellers to maintain the breakdown offers an opening for those buying the pair. The immediate task for buyers is navigating the approaching resistance.

Hawkish pause keeps attention on the upcoming meeting

Lagarde made clear that leaving rates unchanged at this gathering in no way precludes a rise at the subsequent one. Underlying inflation persists as a crucial policy gauge, while elevated energy costs alongside geopolitical shifts keep the economic landscape complex.

This nuance is significant. An institution can maintain current rates while issuing a hawkish outlook by keeping a further increase as a viable option in its forward guidance. Financial markets react to adjustments in the anticipated trajectory of rates, not just the immediate policy verdict.

Core inflation figures enable policymakers to evaluate the durability of price pressures underneath fluctuating headline data. Surging energy expenses can directly boost the headline rate, but the wider worry is if these rises spill over into other goods, pay demands, and inflation predictions.

The ECB’s statement creates space to accumulate additional proof of the economic trend while preserving the capacity to intervene later.

Upcoming economic releases to guide the next ECB adjustment

Regarding economic expansion, the ECB will evaluate forthcoming GDP releases together with wage growth, jobless figures, and the November PMI data to determine how the economy is adapting to stricter financial conditions. Revised projections from ECB staff and a pair of fresh inflation readings will also influence the upcoming choice.

These figures are significant because monetary policy operates with a delay. The impact of elevated borrowing costs on family expenditure, corporate investment, and overall demand materializes slowly. Policymakers must decide whether this moderation is adequate to cool inflation or if ongoing price strains demand another rate hike.

For market participants, this scenario maintains attention on how the figures alter forecasts. Sustained high inflation combined with robust economic activity might amplify the argument for additional tightening. Conversely, milder inflation numbers and softer expansion could favor another interval of watching.

EURUSD break below 1.11135 lacks sustained selling pressure

From a structural perspective, the initial push beneath 1.11135 handed sellers a chance to stretch the fall. This price point had drawn buyers on two prior occasions, establishing it as a marked floor and a sensible gauge for the downward direction.

The downturn to 1.1106 proved short-lived, however, as the pair swiftly turned around.

A successful breach of a support level demands sustained pressure to validate the negative signal. When the exchange rate dips under a clearly established floor only to bounce back above it swiftly, the breakdown can provoke short covering and new purchase interest. Those who sold during the drop could end up holding short positions beneath a regained support level.

The failure to break lower does not by itself create a permanent floor. It does reveal that sellers were unable to hold price action under the earlier floor level. Bullish participants currently need to capitalize on that setback by pushing through overhanging resistance.

Buyers challenged by resistance band from 1.1152 to 1.11616

The recovery ascent to near 1.1155 lifted the EURUSD rate into the fluctuating region spanning 1.1152 to 1.11602. Directly overhead is the declining 100-hour moving average, located at 1.11616.

These points together constitute the initial major barrier for the upward move.

Swing zones point to rates where the market has formerly turned around or encountered support and resistance. Moving averages serve as additional benchmarks for assessing momentum and measuring exposure. When such markers are clustered tightly, they form a practical decision point for both buyers and sellers.

A rise above 1.11616, and continued trading beyond that level, would fortify the buyers’ stance. A short-lived surge through resistance that ended with a turnaround would hold less significance.

Once past that barrier, the following goals above are:

  • 1.11845 — The prior floor level from October 15 to October 26.

  • 1.11913 — The declining 200-hour moving average.

The earlier floor is important because a support level that has been breached can turn into resistance when the market tries to rise through it. Conquering that, and then the 200-hour moving average, would deliver extra confirmation that buyers are assuming command.

If buyers are turned away, the former floor returns as a key level

Should the swing zone and the 100-hour moving average contain the upward move, the recovery would stay exposed to downside risk. Market focus would revert to the 1.11130–1.11135 range, and subsequently to the low of the session at 1.1106.

A fresh fall beneath the previous double-bottom formation would offer sellers a further chance. Sustaining a position under 1.1106, and holding it, would then be necessary to push the downtrend further.

Presently, bullish participants have spurned the lowest levels, while bearish participants still hold the resistance above. The upcoming challenge is if the EURUSD can convert its unsuccessful push lower into a lasting ascent through the 1.1152–1.11616 barrier.

The breakdown was refused by buyers, but the wall at 1.1152–1.11616 stands as the next obstacle.

This framework of technical price points emphasizes the levels that will aid in deciding if the EURUSD recovery can continue or if sellers will recapture command.

Resistance barriers, ordered from topmost to bottommost:

  • 1.11913 — Descending 200-hour moving average. This is a loftier barrier that bullish participants must surmount to reinforce their optimistic outlook.

  • 1.11845 — The former floor from the October 15–26 period. Once a support zone, it can turn into an obstacle when the market rises toward it.

  • 1.11616 — Descending 100-hour moving average. A critical gauge for the rally. Pushing and remaining above this level would give buyers a firmer position.

  • 1.1152–1.11602 — Swing resistance zone. This is the current conflict region, in play since the bounce to around 1.1155.

Support floors, sorted from highest to lowest:

  • 1.11130–1.11135 — Regained support near the earlier double bottom. Staying above this band would assist in maintaining the recovery built on the failed downside break. Dropping under it would undermine that rationale.

  • 1.1106 — The low of the trading session. Bearish participants require a committed breach under this mark to validate a new downward leg.

Technical insight: these price marks offer benchmarks to evaluate market moves and to outline exposure. Sellers positioned against the resistance line have a distinct marker for when their negative thesis erodes. Participants seeking an upside breakout require continued activity above resistance, and preferably for that region to function as support during a later test.

At this moment, the span from 1.1152 to 1.11616 is the primary battleground. Breaking through it unlocks the route to 1.11845 and 1.11913. Being turned back keeps attention fixed on the regained floor zone around 1.11135.
