Anthropic IPO ranks first on multiple metrics despite huge losses
Anthropic IPO filing shows 900% net revenue retention, a $66.3B quarterly loss, and a $1.5T valuation, topping many historical IPO metrics.
European stocks mostly rose; UK FTSE fell on HSBC weakness. US durable goods and confidence up; housing soft. Dollar gained, gold rose, oil near $100.
With the trading day ending in London and Europe, continental benchmarks are closing in positive territory, paced by Italy and Germany. The FTSE 100 in London is an outlier, declining as HSBC's weakness hurts sentiment. At the same time, French bond yields are climbing even as French stocks recover, signaling ongoing caution.
Gains in Italy and Germany outpace others; HSBC drags the FTSE
Germany's DAX added 195.79 points, or 0.77%, closing at 25,606.64. France's CAC 40 increased 39.82 points, or 0.51%, to 7,887.15. Spain's Ibex rose 127.30 points, or 0.67%, ending at 19,160.60. Italy's FTSE MIB was the top performer, climbing 441.14 points, or 0.90%, to 49,627.94. By contrast, the UK FTSE 100 dropped 80.77 points, or 0.75%, to 10,686.55.
HSBC weighed on the index after its revenue disappointed, pushing its shares lower by almost 7% during the session. Meanwhile, Novartis boosted its earnings guidance, and BE Semiconductor Industries gained on Applied Materials raising its stake to 20%. Market participants are also looking ahead to the Federal Reserve's decision on Wednesday and the European Central Bank's on Thursday. www.reuters.com
French consumer confidence drops; bond spread grows
France continues to be a worry. Consumer confidence declined by five points to 80, the weakest level since June 2013, amid ongoing protests over economic policies. This means the rebound in French equities is occurring against a challenging domestic environment. www.aol.com
The bond market mirrors this anxiety. France's 10-year yield increased 2.4 basis points to 4.927%, while Germany's dropped 0.9 basis point to 3.361%. The spread between French and German yields thus reached 156.6 basis points, expanding 3.3 basis points on the day. Although equity buyers are active, the widening spread indicates that investors still demand extra compensation for holding French debt.
Elsewhere, Italy's 10-year yield added 1.4 basis points to 4.514%, Spain's edged down 0.3 basis point to 4.005%, and the UK's yield was nearly flat at 5.353%, rising 0.1 basis point.
US factory orders and confidence rise; consumers still wary
In the United States, economic data presented a mixed view: manufacturing orders and consumer confidence improved, but housing stayed weak.
Durable goods orders in September rose 1.8%, after a 0.1% rise in August. Transportation drove the increase with a 4.6% climb, but orders excluding transportation also rose 0.5%. That underlying gain indicates the improvement was not limited to the volatile transportation sector, even though that sector contributed most of the headline figure. www.census.gov
Consumer confidence also recovered. The Conference Board index climbed to 91.7 from an upwardly revised 84.2, with gains in both current conditions and expectations. But the details were more cautious: consumers intended to spend less on services and durable goods, and inflation expectations stayed high at 5.8%. While confidence improved, households continue to monitor their purchasing power. www.conference-board.org
Home sales weaken; prices keep rising
New home sales in September edged down 0.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 676,000, from 680,000 in August, and were 5.3% lower than a year earlier. Inventory fell to 476,000 homes, but supply stayed high at 8.4 months. Builders now have fewer homes on hand than a month earlier, yet the sales pace still gives buyers ample options.
The FHFA reported that home prices rose 0.3% in August and 2.4% year-over-year. July's monthly increase was revised to 0.2% from 0.3%. Prices continue to climb nationally, increasing affordability pressures even as sales stay soft.
US 10-year yield nears 5% level
US Treasury yields rose across the curve in the provided data, with bigger gains on the short end. The two-year yield added 2.38 basis points to 4.7348%, the five-year increased 1.65 basis points to 4.8405%, and the 10-year ticked up 0.86 basis point to 4.9946%. The 30-year yield gained 0.72 basis point to 5.3082%.
This puts the 10-year just under the 5.00% threshold as traders wait for the Fed. A sustained break above that level would keep borrowing costs and stock valuations in the spotlight.
Dollar strengthens against major currencies
The dollar strengthened against major currencies. EUR/USD dropped 0.30% to 1.1139, GBP/USD fell 0.24% to 1.3307. USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 157.86, USD/CHF gained 0.19% to 0.8287, and USD/CAD increased 0.26% to 1.4047.
AUD/USD and NZD/USD also moved lower, at 0.7029 and 0.5685 respectively. These broad gains indicate widespread dollar demand ahead of the Fed decision.
Oil hovers near $100; gold attracts buyers
In commodities, crude oil declined while metals saw buying. The December crude contract lost $1.49, or 1.46%, settling at $100.27. The $100 mark serves as a psychological reference point. Remaining below that level would deepen the retreat; staying above would require sellers to do more.
Gold rose even as the dollar strengthened and Treasury yields increased. Spot gold climbed $43.51, or 1.08%, to $4,060.70. Silver advanced 0.88% to $54.41, and copper rose 1.68% to $6.6520. Bitcoin also ticked up, gaining 0.49% to $80,400, keeping it near the $80,000 pivot point.
Fed and tech earnings on deck
Focus now shifts to the central banks and the upcoming batch of tech earnings. Microsoft and Alphabet announce results on Wednesday, followed by Amazon on Thursday, bringing returns on massive AI investments back into focus. For traders, the key question is whether the improving equity mood can sustain momentum with US yields still near 5%.
