Italy's October CPI climbs to 5.4% y/y, above forecasts

Italy's preliminary October CPI rose 5.4% y/y, beating forecasts, with energy prices driving the surge and food and transport costs also accelerating.

Inflation in Italy accelerated sharply in October 2026, though the surge was chiefly the result of energy prices, as both regulated and unregulated energy products saw notable increases. Regulated energy inflation jumped to 59.5% y/y from 25.8%, while prices for non-regulated energy rose to 29.4% from 22.5%. The increased energy costs continue to be the principal factor behind the inflationary pressure.

Still, price rises were not confined to the energy sector. Inflation for unprocessed food quickened to 7.5% from 5.5%, and processed food prices also moved back into positive annual growth. Services inflation advanced at a more subdued pace, edging up to 2.9% from 2.6%, with transport-related services accelerating to 3.1%.

The goods component stood out, as annual inflation there jumped to 7.5% from 5.4%, whereas services inflation stayed considerably more restrained. That implies the latest acceleration remains heavily tilted toward goods and energy-linked costs, rather than reflecting a broad-based rise across services.

In sum, the figures reveal a marked inflationary shock for Italy, driven largely by climbing energy expenses but increasingly filtering into food and transport prices.
