Cheap money era ends, forcing investor strategy shift
Bond yields hit multi-decade highs, signalling the end of cheap money and forcing investors to demand higher returns.
Kevin O'Leary purchased a unique Shohei Ohtani card for $11 million and wants 5% of his portfolio in sports collectibles.
Kevin O'Leary is moving away from Bitcoin (BTC) and stocks for his latest purchase. The Shark Tank personality aims to allocate roughly 5% of his portfolio to rare sports cards, with his syndicate recently spending $11 million on a single card.
The unique card contains fragments from a game-worn Shohei Ohtani jersey and is one of a kind. It was discovered by a Florida teenager at a store in Boca Raton. O'Leary revealed the acquisition on CNBC the previous Tuesday.
O'Leary makes the case for sports cards using the same logic that bitcoin supporters apply to their asset. The U.S. M2 money supply reached $23.22 trillion in July, and he prefers holdings that central banks cannot inflate further.
I see sports collectibles as an alternative asset class.

My strategy is simple. Own many of the very best cards, diversify across them like an index, and let the portfolio compound over time. I want about 5% of my portfolio exposed to this category.

O'Leary makes his purchases via Secure Collectibles together with collector Shyne and entrepreneur Paul Warshaw. They call their portfolio the WonderShyne Index and have invested about $100 million to date.
That argument directly mirrors the debasement-trade narrative that has driven Bitcoin demand throughout the year.
O'Leary both selects the cards and sets the criteria for inclusion. He states that the index contains no losing positions, a claim that is simple to make when the curator controls what is admitted.
The profits are unrealized. Card Ladder values his Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant card, purchased for $12.93 million, at approximately $17.05 million, but O'Leary has stated he plans to hold it forever.
A unique card has only a single potential buyer when a sale is needed. His cryptocurrency holdings are smaller but much more liquid.
In September 2025, BeInCrypto reported that O'Leary had reduced to three crypto positions, a claim that proved accurate when he affirmed in April that Bitcoin and Ether (ETH) account for 90% of those holdings.
It remains unclear if external investors will ever gain access to the index. O'Leary has suggested public availability but has made no commitments.
