The PBOC is expected to fix the USD/CNY midpoint at 6.6596, according to a Reuters poll. The fixing is a key policy signal in Asian FX markets.
Around 0115 GMT (2115 US Eastern time), the PBOC will announce its daily USD/CNY reference rate, a fixing that is among the most observed indicators in Asian FX markets.
The renminbi (yuan) operates under a managed float, where it can trade within a set band around a daily midpoint determined by the PBOC. The current band allows onshore trading within plus or minus 2% of that official midpoint.
The PBOC sets the midpoint each morning using several factors: the prior day's closing price, moves in major currencies (especially the dollar), global FX conditions, and domestic factors like capital flows, growth momentum, and financial stability goals. Because the calculation is not purely mechanical, policymakers have room to steer market expectations.
After the midpoint is released, onshore trading of USD/CNY can move freely within the permitted band. When market forces drive the yuan to either boundary, the central bank may intervene to reduce volatility. Such intervention includes directly buying or selling the yuan, adjusting liquidity, or directing state-owned banks.
Consequently, the daily midpoint is viewed more as a policy signal than a purely technical reference. A CNY fixing that comes in stronger than anticipated usually suggests the PBOC is resisting depreciation pressure, whereas a weaker fix may signal acceptance of a softer currency, frequently due to a strong dollar or domestic economic challenges.
During times of high global volatility—like changes in US rate expectations, trade disputes, or capital flow pressures—the midpoint becomes even more important. It gives investors a window into Beijing's currency policy priorities, as it balances competitiveness, capital stability, and market confidence.
