The PBOC is expected to announce its daily USD/CNY midpoint around 0115 GMT, with Reuters estimating it at 6.6758.
At around 0115 GMT (2115 US Eastern time), the People's Bank of China will announce its daily USD/CNY midpoint. The announcement remains one of the most closely monitored signals in Asian currency markets.
The PBOC sets a central reference rate — the midpoint — each trading day, and under China's managed floating exchange-rate system the renminbi (yuan) can trade within a prescribed band around it. During onshore trading hours, the currency can move as much as 2% above or below the official midpoint.
A range of inputs goes into the midpoint the PBOC sets every morning. These include the previous session's closing price, the performance of major currencies, especially the dollar, global FX conditions, and domestic factors such as capital flows, growth momentum and financial stability objectives. Policymakers have room to steer market expectations because the midpoint is not a purely mechanical calculation.
Once the midpoint is published, onshore USD/CNY can trade freely in the permitted band. If market pressure pushes the yuan to either end of the band, the PBOC may intervene to calm fluctuations. It could buy or sell yuan directly, alter liquidity conditions, or send guidance through state-owned banks.
The daily fix is therefore widely read as a statement of policy rather than a purely technical benchmark. When the CNY midpoint comes in above estimates, it is usually viewed as the PBOC pushing back against depreciation. If the fix is weaker than expected, that tends to signal comfort with a softer yuan, often because the dollar is strong or domestic conditions are difficult.
During periods of elevated global volatility — shifting US rate expectations, trade friction, capital-flow pressure — the midpoint carries extra weight. Investors look to it for a read on Beijing's currency agenda, where competitiveness, capital stability and financial-market confidence must be balanced.
