Asia stocks slide as US chip rout spreads; gold slips below $4,000
Asian stocks mostly fell as a US chip rout spread, gold dropped below $4,000, and Japan's core CPI returned above the BoJ target.
Robert Downey Jr. was named honorary chief customer experience officer for Snap Specs before its $2,195 AR glasses go on sale this fall.
Robert Downey Jr. has been appointed honorary Chief Customer Experience Officer by Snap Specs, placing the actor known for Iron Man at the center of its $2,195 augmented reality (AR) glasses. The appointment comes just before the eyewear reaches shoppers later this fall.
The move plays directly on Downey's Marvel role as Tony Stark, the inventor depicted in those films. Snap, however, has not revealed what the job pays.
Snap Specs places apps, games, and an AI assistant over the physical world. In newly posted clips, Downey highlights how the glasses can sharpen a golf game, stream shows on the go, and teach users new skills.
The announcement came through a post on X from SPECS.

Snap also needs a more convincing sales story. Its stock slid when chief executive Evan Spiegel introduced the glasses at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in June.
Rivals add to the pressure. Meta sells its own $1,299 VR glasses, and Snap Specs carries a price tag nearly $900 higher. Meta's product, though, is a virtual reality device, not an AR pair of glasses.
Investors have turned more bullish on Snap in recent days. During the past five trading days, Snap shares have added 7.59%, while the three-month gain stands at almost 40%.
Still, the stock is off 22.48% since the year began.
The Snap Specs agreement remains short on details. No financial terms were released with the announcement, and Downey has stayed silent on his pay.
Tech reporter Alex Heath said in June that Snap was in talks to pay Downey about $100 million. Neither party has confirmed that number. That is relevant to shareholders because a deal paid in stock could dilute their positions.
Snap has also sought to win over business clients. Enterprise partners for Specs were brought on in September, including Nvidia, AWS, and Salesforce.
Meta, in contrast, has earned Wall Street support. JPMorgan increased its Meta price target after the Muse AI agent launch.
Ultimately, the AR glasses battle now depends on celebrity, corporate alliances, and AI assistants at the same time. Downey gives Snap Specs attention. Sales will reveal whether he brings buyers as well.
