Shortwave Coffee now accepts bitcoin at five locations across three states after local bitcoiners advocated for it.
This report covers Shortwave Coffee adopting bitcoin and a broader global trend. Countless determined bitcoin enthusiasts approach counters daily and repeat the same query: "Do you accept bitcoin?" Typically, the response is already known to be negative. The question is still posed, because witnessing a cashier's reaction when a stranger inquires about digital currency over a $5 coffee remains entertaining.
The situation changed in our favor this year. Square began in March 2026 to automatically enable bitcoin acceptance for up to 4 million terminals, shifting the option from an elective tool to a default setting. Nevertheless, the gradual deployment has seemed more like a drip than a flood. Asking around reveals many Square terminals that still lack the update. Consequently, many of us chose to hasten the rollout personally: going into local stores, requesting the manager, and advocating for activating bitcoin payments. This column will chronicle those successes, one enterprise at a time.
In the Saint Louis area, around 250 independent coffee shops exist, and one has earned steadfast loyalty from some bitcoiners. Why?
Shortwave Coffee began in Missouri in 2014 as a small, family-operated roastery and has expanded to five locations across three states: two in Columbia, one in St. Louis, along with outposts in Minneapolis and a roastery in Tampa. They roast their own beans, produce a genuinely fine espresso, and the factor that earned pleb loyalty is that they accept bitcoin at the counter.
Over the past few months, a group of local bitcoiners asked the baristas and contacted their generic company email several times before finally receiving confirmation in July 2026. The St. Louis shop is located in the Central West End at 33 N. Sarah Street. It features a beautiful outdoor patio bordered by a wildflower garden, a large indoor coffee shop with capacity for over 75 people, and plenty of street parking. Two hours west lie Shortwave's original Columbia locations, which also offer a great atmosphere. Same modern design, genuine local feel, and bitcoin acceptance.
That is essentially the premise of this entire column: we can choose top-quality establishments to support. If they understand high-caliber products and care about their customers, they will accept bitcoin when customers request it. Square is a fine option, but bitcoin does not discriminate.
If your favorite coffee shop, mechanic, or any small business has just activated bitcoin, inform me. Let's examine how this shift in currency is occurring; send details to Vagabond@b.tc, and we will contact you to cover the story.
