Ethereum drops 6% as ETF outflows and macro pressures mount; key support broken

Tether is launching USDT on Bitcoin again after over a decade, using private RGB technology.
Tether’s USDT, a digital dollar worth $184 billion, is returning to the Bitcoin network this month, over a decade after its initial launch there. The updated iteration underscores private transactions by keeping most data off Bitcoin’s public ledger.
USDT is the biggest stablecoin, a crypto asset fixed to the US dollar. Its comeback coincides with Washington questioning whether Tether can manage its existing coin supply.
For now, there is no impact. Tether characterised the initiative as widening its Bitcoin presence in a 2025 statement. Tokens on Tron and Ethereum remain unaffected.
“USDT on Bitcoin. It’s coming home,” wrote Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s CEO.
Ardoino outlined the ambition in 2025, promising exchanges and wallets private transactions, conversions between BTC and USDT, and Bitcoin-collateralised loans.
“Bitcoin deserves a stablecoin that feels truly native, lightweight, private, and scalable,” Ardoino said at the time.
Is USDT Abandoning Tron and Ethereum?
That is not happening. Currently, around $92 billion of USDT resides on Tron, roughly half of all circulating coins, per DefiLlama. Ethereum holds another $74 billion. These two networks collectively carry more than 90% of the supply.
Tether’s 2025 statement does not mention removing USDT from those blockchains. Its headline describes the plan as growing Tether’s Bitcoin support.
Still, Tether has previously discontinued networks. In September 2025, it halted support for five older systems, including Omni, the Bitcoin-based platform where USDT first emerged.
The rollout is handled by Utexo, a startup that raised $7.5 million in a round led by Tether. Co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk stated this week that Utexo now holds a commercial licence to mint the coin.
Spent an evening in Washington talking USDT on Bitcoin with @MorganStanley

They invited me to dinner, where I caught up with @MergnerMS, Joe Medioli and a few people from the team I’ve known for quite some time

The underlying infrastructure is RGB, a framework for tokens like USDT on Bitcoin. Transaction details remain with the sender and receiver, while only a small cryptographic fingerprint is written to Bitcoin.
Rather than superseding Tron and Ethereum, the Bitcoin version uses them. Utexo’s bridge, a mechanism for transferring coins across networks, sources USDT mainly from Ethereum and Tron, the RGB Protocol Association said.
For users, the token remains the same, fixed to the dollar. The distinction is which network it is used on.
Exchanges already ask users to choose a network, such as Tron or Ethereum, before sending USDT. Misdirected transfers can result in lost funds.
Freezing is Tether’s primary response to criticism. When US senators claimed Iran relies on Tether’s USDT to evade sanctions, Tether pointed to $550 million it had frozen.
On Tron and Ethereum, every USDT transfer is recorded on a public ledger. Investigators are able to trace the flow of funds.
The RGB version conceals most of that trail. Tether’s statement does not specify how freezes would function.
Utexo has engaged Crystal Intelligence, a blockchain-analytics firm, for compliance, according to the RGB Protocol Association. Ihnatiuk himself downplays the privacy angle.
“RGB…is mainly just a token standard, one that also brings you privacy, but that’s more of a side feature,” RGB reported, citing Ihnatiuk.
The launch has also missed a mid-September timeline that Utexo once described as achievable.
Meanwhile, Utexo has met Morgan Stanley to discuss USDT on Bitcoin. Support for Lightning, a faster Bitcoin payment network, will come after the initial deployment. Until wallets and exchanges activate it, Bitcoin USDT has no route for transactions.
