US and Canadian officials are reportedly discussing lower tariffs on steel and auto imports, with a potential agreement before the November 3 midterm elections.
The number of incorrect claims about a 'Canada-USA trade deal' is comparable to the number of reports about 'peace in Hormuz', so skepticism is warranted. Over the weekend, there was chatter about fresh trade talks led by Lutnick.
According to a Reuters report citing two Canadian and four American sources, the two sides are negotiating lower tariffs on automobiles and steel. These discussions take place amid widespread dissatisfaction with tariffs in US border states, and Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers is now campaigning against tariffs.
The Reuters article indicates that an agreement could be reached ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, but the US is seeking additional concessions from Canada.
"If it happens, it'll happen fast. But my sense is that it'll be a narrowed deal, if it ever happens" a 'Canadian industry source' is cited as saying. Under the current timeline, tariffs on Canadian automobiles and steel are set to increase to 50% starting January 1, but President Trump stated at a weekend rally that a deal might be reached "soon".
