Bank of England hikes to 4%, sterling unable to sustain rise
The Bank of England raised its key rate to 4%, with sterling nearly unchanged on the day. The dollar was mixed, and U.S. futures were mixed as chip stocks…
USDCAD sellers broke below a key support zone but failed to sustain the move, giving buyers a chance to regain control above 1.4204.
Over recent days, the USDCAD has experienced significant volatility.
One day after reaching a new yearly high, the pair's highest since April 2025, it reversed to the downside as sellers resisted at those peaks.
The downward pressure drove the exchange rate beneath a support zone that had been intact since September 30, spanning 1.4192 to 1.4204. That breakdown carried the currency pair to a daily low of 1.4171, yet the move lost steam rapidly. During the same hourly candle, prices climbed back into that range and then approached its top edge.
Bears had an opportunity beneath that support. They failed to capitalize.
This provides bulls with motivation to test higher levels. But the bounce has not yet built significant traction above 1.4204. Buyers have a chance, but must demonstrate they can seize command.
What conditions would strengthen the buyers' hand?
The initial condition is to rise above and remain above 1.4204. A lasting break above that threshold would target:
1.42205 – the peak levels from the past three sessions.
1.42416 – the convergence point of the 100- and 200-hour moving averages.
Those moving averages represent another key hurdle. Clearing the support floor is one achievement. Surpassing both moving averages would bolster the argument for buyers.
What scenario would give sellers renewed influence?
A decline back under 1.4192, combined with sustaining that level, would shift the near-term outlook downward. That would highlight these downside objectives:
1.4171 – the current session's low point.
1.4130 to 1.41532 – the subsequent swing region, where 1.41532 appears first.
Key takeaway: a breakdown that fails requires subsequent confirmation.
When the exchange rate breaches a well-defined support level, bears require it to remain beneath that level and continue falling. A swift rebound indicates the breakdown did not generate sufficient selling continuation.
However, a failed bearish breakdown does not instantly hand control to buyers. The bounce also requires validation.
For the USDCAD, the 1.4192 to 1.4204 zone remains the pivotal region. Holding above 1.4204 gives bulls a more compelling argument for additional gains. Dropping back under 1.4192 and staying there would again support the bearish case.
Bears had their opportunity. They did not seize it. Now bulls must rise above and hold above 1.4204 to ensure that failure has consequences.
