Bitcoin falls 4% after $85,000 rejection, $80,000 in focus

Bitcoin fell 4% after rejection near $85,000; $80,000 is next key level per on-chain data.

Bitcoin reversed its two-day advance following a rejection close to $85,000. The cryptocurrency dropped roughly 4% to a session low of $81,652 on Bybit.

According to on-chain metrics and technical charts, $80,000 is the next significant threshold. A lack of buying interest and weakening momentum may turn that level into a critical decision point.

Bitcoin Treasuries Sit Near Breakeven but Stopped Buying

Glassnode data shows that corporate bitcoin treasuries acquired their holdings at an average price of approximately $80,000. BTC has settled above that level each day since September 18.

Yet these treasuries have not resumed buying. Net monthly purchases have contracted to just a few thousand BTC, well under the highs seen in 2025.

Glassnode observes that purchasing while in profit can become self-reinforcing. Buying drives the price up, boosting share values and enabling further purchases. That cycle has not yet resumed.

BTC treasury companies are in profit but barely buying.

They hold $BTC at a cost basis of about $80K, and price has closed above it since September 18.

In profit, buying can feed on itself: purchases lift price, price lifts their shares, and their shares fund more purchases.

At the same time, stablecoin reserves on exchanges have dropped to their lowest level in a year, removing new purchasing capacity from the market.

A fall beneath $80,000 would return treasuries to a loss position. During mid-2022, a comparable period below cost basis triggered one of the few significant net sales recorded on Glassnode's data.

Short-Term Holders Offer a Deeper Cushion

More recent purchasers present a less concerning outlook. According to Glassnode, the short-term holder realized price was $74,850 on October 21.

That figure reflects the average purchase price for recently obtained coins. With bitcoin around $82,000, these holders are still roughly 9% in profit.

Historically, that level acted as resistance for much of 2026. Bitcoin was turned away at that point in May and fell under $60,000 by early July.

BTC recovered that level in late August. Staying above it preserves the broader recovery pattern.

Bitcoin Price Must Hold $81,500 to Avoid an $80,000 Test

Analyst Ted Pillows pointed out that the weekly candlestick turned bearish after bitcoin could not maintain above $84,500. However, he added that buyers have not surrendered control since BTC remains above its 50-day moving averages.

$BTC weekly candle has turned red.

Bitcoin failed to hold above $84,500 and has completely erased its last two days' gains.

The good thing is Bitcoin is still holding above the 50D SMA and 50D EMA, which means buyers haven't completely lost control.

On the daily timeframe, bitcoin is probing the 50-day moving average at $81,835. It has also dipped slightly under the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement at $82,614.

The four-hour chart displays five straight bearish candles following an unsuccessful attempt to break above $84,000. The decline brought BTC back to an upward trendline originating from the October 15 low.

That trendline currently converges with the $81,500 swing low, creating the closest cluster of support.

Momentum is deteriorating. The four-hour relative strength index is around 45 and is breaking a rising trendline that had been intact since October 8.

Yet the volume during this decline is still lower than during the preceding rally. This indicates a shortage of buying interest rather than heavy selling pressure.

If $81,500 gives way, the $80,000 treasury cost basis becomes relevant. Under that, the 0.5 Fibonacci retracement is at $77,876.

The $73,000 to $75,000 range contains the 0.382 Fibonacci level and the short-term holder cost basis. That combined area could provide more substantial support if the downturn continues.

On the positive side, recovering $84,000 would clear the way toward the $85,000 to $87,000 resistance area.
