European equities fell at the open, with French 10-year yields above 5% and the France-Germany spread beyond 160 bps.
The strain is back. European shares are heading for a punishing open, with French budget concerns and wider bond-market stress still hanging over investors.
It is an ugly session, with the calmer mood from the previous day fully erased. Today's selling may only be reappearing, but the caution signs were visible all week, above all in the bond market.
French borrowing costs are climbing sharply again, with the 10-year yield breaking through 5% for the first time since 2002. At the same time, the gap between French and German 10-year yields has moved beyond 160 bps, a level last seen in the eurozone debt crisis.
That hardly provides a reassuring backdrop for European stocks, particularly when investors are already coping with elevated global bond yields and lingering geopolitical uncertainty.
Worse may lie ahead for France, with Moody's due to review the country's sovereign credit rating tomorrow. The possibility of a downgrade is clearly adding to today's market jitters.
France is not the only negative influence on the overall risk picture, though. Asian equities had a difficult session earlier too, and US futures are also in the red. S&P 500 futures are down 1% and Nasdaq futures are down 1.7%, with AI concerns still weighing on sentiment. That shows how brittle confidence is, even after the stronger showing at the start of this month.
For now, the key question is whether the latest selling picks up further steam. With bond yields remaining elevated and no apparent breakthrough on France's fiscal mess, a quick return of dip buyers seems doubtful.
