Key FX option expiries to watch on 5 November
EUR/USD option expiries at 1.1250 and 1.1275 could cap price action on Tuesday.
GBP/USD slipped below the 38.2% retracement at 1.3342 and is testing the 200-hour moving average near 1.3334, leaving sellers with the near-term edge.
In early North American trading, GBPUSD has fallen to a fresh session low as sellers drove the price beneath the 38.2% retracement of the drop from the August high to the October low, a level at 1.3342.
Earlier in the session, buyers defended that retracement and pushed the pair up to 1.3356 in a limited bounce. That rally faded, and once 1.3342 was lost, the near-term attention swung to the next downside target: the upward-sloping 200-hour moving average at 1.33327.
With the pair around 1.3334, that moving average is now under test, making the current area a key battleground between buyers and sellers.
The selling pressure first showed up as a ceiling overhead.
Sellers gained conviction during the Asian-Pacific session when the high ran into the 100-day moving average at 1.33874 and stalled there.
That rejection handed traders a technical excuse to sell, with the moving average offering a clear level to define risk. Buyers had a chance to push through a longer-term technical ceiling, but they could not complete that task, and the price turned lower.
Now that the 1.3342 retracement has been broken, sellers are looking to build on that rejection by taking out an important hourly support level.
Why the 200-hour moving average carries weight
A break under the 200-hour moving average would be the first time the pair has traded beneath that indicator since October 15, giving the level more weight than a typical chart line.
That average has been part of what underpins the bullish structure of the recent corrective move. Remaining above it preserves part of that structure. Falling below it and staying there would indicate that sellers have gained greater control.
The difference matters. A short-lived dip under a moving average does not necessarily confirm a sustained breakdown. The question is whether price can continue lower and whether any bounce finds sellers close to the broken level.
Should price dip below the average and quickly climb back above it, the sellers' best opportunity may have come and gone.
A break that is followed through, though, would open the path toward the next swing zone between 1.3298 and 1.33103. Traders would first meet the upper edge of that zone at 1.33103, then 1.3298.
Buyers also have a reason to participate
Despite today's losses, the 200-hour moving average remains a potential support area for those buying the dip.
Why buy while the price is falling? A recognizable technical level gives traders a point where risk can be defined and capped.
A buyer leaning on the moving average is hoping support will hold and the price will turn higher. If the price instead breaks below with momentum and remains there, the rationale for that trade weakens. The level supplies a reference for recognizing when the approach is no longer working.
That does not ensure a bounce or a precise exit price. It does provide the trade with a clear technical framework.
To prove they are doing more than briefly slowing the fall, buyers would need to take back 1.3342. That would put price back above the lost 38.2% retracement and signal that the latest downside break is losing momentum.
The subsequent upside milestones are:
1.3355–1.3356: the earlier corrective high.
1.33807: the 100-hour moving average.
1.33874: the 100-day moving average that served as the ceiling for the Asian-Pacific session high.
Each level regained would strengthen the buyers' position. Until then, any bounce remains a recovery inside today's move lower.
Sellers have made their play. Can they finish it?
For now, the rejection at the 100-day moving average and the drop below 1.3342 hand sellers the near-term edge.
The next requirement is still to get through the 200-hour moving average at 1.33327.
If they get below and stay below, the bearish case gets stronger, with 1.33103 and 1.3298 as the next downside targets. If support holds and price returns above 1.3342, sellers risk losing some of today's momentum.
Sellers are making a move, and the test ahead is whether they can turn that pressure into a sustained break.
