European stocks climb; FTSE dips as French yields advance
European stocks mostly rose; UK FTSE fell on HSBC weakness. US durable goods and confidence up; housing soft. Dollar gained, gold rose, oil near $100.
Magnificent 7 stocks show divergent moves ahead of earnings from Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon; Nvidia and Tesla rise while Meta, Apple, Alphabet fall.
The group that once dominated, the Magnificent 7, now appears less impressive. Yet their large weightings in major benchmarks ensure they remain closely watched and exert significant impact on market movements.
Tuesday's session underscores the growing divergence among the seven stocks. Key tech benchmarks are gaining:
Nasdaq Composite: Up near 0.90%.
Nasdaq 100: Up near 1.25%.
However, three members of the group are losing ground: Meta is dropping roughly 1.38%, Apple about 1.40%, and Alphabet around 1%.
The seven stocks are no longer trading in unison. This makes individual technical charts more relevant, particularly as three key earnings reports are due:
Microsoft and Alphabet: Wednesday after the close.
Amazon: Thursday after the close.
Microsoft: trading between its moving averages prior to earnings
The stock is currently above its 200-hour moving average of $519.76 but below the 100-hour level at $532.42.
Being between these averages gives a neutral short-term bias. Buyers have a support level beneath them but need to break higher to gain control.
A clear move above $532.42 would shift the technical edge to buyers, while a drop below $519.76 would empower sellers. Until one of these levels is decisively breached, the moving averages define the trading range before earnings.
Alphabet: sellers in charge but key support zone remains
Alphabet shares are down roughly 0.92% to $317.30, with an intraday low of $316.60. After falling below the 200-day moving average at $341.27 last week, sellers have taken the upper hand and the stock has extended its decline.
The next major support lies in the $311.42 to $314.90 range. This zone serves as a short-term gauge: if it holds, buyers may stabilize the stock before Wednesday's earnings; if it breaks, further downside opens up.
Should the stock rebound, $324.25 is the initial upside target, then the 200-day moving average at $341.27. Sellers still hold the advantage. Buyers must defend the support and break above these resistance levels to change the technical outlook.
Amazon: former support turns into resistance above
Last week, Amazon dropped below its 100-hour, 200-hour and 100-day moving averages, handing the technical edge to sellers.
The stock is around $248.46, beneath the resistance zone formed by the 100-day moving average at $251.76 and the 100-hour level at $256.65.
Buyers need to recapture that zone to better the technical setup. Until they do, any rallies will be capped by sellers at those resistance points.
To the downside, support lies in the $244.42 to $246.45 range, followed by the 200-day moving average at $243.30. These are the levels buyers will aim to hold before Thursday's earnings report.
Nvidia: buyers attempt to retake the 100-day moving average
Nvidia is up about 2.67% at $216.57, moving back above its 100-day moving average of $214.41 after falling beneath it last week.
This brings the moving average back into play as a key level. If the stock stays above, buyers have a foundation for more gains; if it drops back below, the day's advance becomes less meaningful.
Upward, the next significant target is last week's high of $222.30. The declining 100-hour moving average is close to this level, adding another obstacle.
Buyers are making a push, but they must defend the reclaimed support and then surpass the overhead resistance.
Apple: pullback amid generally strong technicals
Apple's chart is among the group's strongest, still near its record high even after today's drop of approximately 1.3%ā1.4%.
A single down session does not overturn a bullish technical stance. The key is whether the selling will breach important support and hand more control to sellers.
For now, the overall technical backdrop still supports buyers.
Tesla: robust bounce nears next resistance
Tesla is surging roughly 6.14%, pushing the stock back above its 200-day moving average of $386.14.
This move above the moving average is favorable for buyers. Holding above that level would sustain the improvement.
However, the next challenge is nearby. The 50% retracement of the drop from the late-2025 peak to the July 2026 trough is around $398. The session high was $397.27, just below that level.
Buyers have advanced, but they need to clear and hold above $398 to improve their argument. If not, the rally may halt at a natural resistance zone.
With earnings on the horizon, these technical levels offer traders a way to assess the response. The earnings reports could provide the catalyst. Whether prices break and stay above resistance or sink through support will decide which side gains control.
