Gold traders eye $4,000 support as Fed decision approaches

Gold is trading near $4,000 as Treasury yields top 5% and traders await the Fed decision, with a hawkish outcome seen as a risk to the metal.

Gold traders are in for a tense stretch, with the latter half of this week shaping up as a critical period for markets. The metal already looks vulnerable, barely clinging to levels above $4,000 as some major risk events approach later in the day.

Several forces are weighing on gold at this stage, and the bond market may be the biggest. The 10-year Treasury yield has moved back above 5%, while the dollar is close to a two-week high. Neither development helps gold, especially with traders already dealing with plenty of uncertainty elsewhere.

In that context, the Fed decision later today could pile more pressure on the metal. The central bank is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged, but the focus will be on whether it signals another hike in December. A hawkish message could lift Treasury yields and the dollar, leaving gold open to a deeper slide.

The broader risk mood is another factor to watch.

Over the past two weeks, fault lines have started to show in the AI trade. With Microsoft and Alphabet due to report earnings, investors will be looking for reassurance that the heavy outlay is beginning to pay off.

Normally, an equity selloff would be expected to help gold through safe-haven demand. If market turmoil turns ugly, however, forced liquidation and margin calls could lead traders to exit structurally long gold positions, meaning they sell bullion to raise cash.

The technical setup is hardly reassuring either. Gold is changing hands near $4,030 at present, with $4,000 still the crucial support to watch.

A decisive break below that would put the June-July lows around $3,940-60 in focus, potentially clearing a path toward $3,900. In the event of a broader selloff in the metal, the 100-week moving average near $3,871 would be another key downside level to track.

Buyers, meanwhile, have plenty of work on their hands. They would need to reclaim $4,100 first and then the $4,200-20 region, with the 100-day moving average around $4,218 acting as a further hurdle higher up.

For now, the reaction of the bond market to the Fed and the direction of risk sentiment will be decisive. If Treasury yields and the dollar advance while equities weaken, gold could struggle to hold above $4,000.
