BlackRock's Bitcoin Trust Sees $405M Outflow, but Firm Isn't Selling
BlackRock's IBIT saw $405.3M in client-driven outflows on Nov 2, not a sale by the firm itself.
Vitalik Buterin used his Devcon 8 appearance to warn that AI could break cryptographic security.
Vitalik Buterin has expressed worry that AI could cover 50 years of mathematics in five and break the cryptography safeguarding Ethereum and Bitcoin. The Ethereum co-founder posted this concern on X the day he started Devcon 8 wearing a smiley mask.
Quantum computers have been the long-anticipated threat the industry prepares for. But Buterin's concern also includes lattice-based methods, the mathematics behind several prominent post-quantum standards. As a result, ETH and BTC holders might confront a risk that the planned quantum remedies may not entirely eliminate.
In response to a user's speculation about his thinking, Buterin indicated algorithms that could exist but are not yet discovered. His primary instance was the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem (ECDLP), the mathematics that secures private keys on both networks.
He also brought up pairings, a technique that underlies the signatures Ethereum validators employ to vote on blocks.
I would describe my worry as: what if the equivalent of quadratic sieve for ECDLP or pairings (and similarly, more-powerful-than-today algorithms for breaking lattices) exist, and we've just not yet managed to find them – but AI speedrunning 50+ years of math in 5 years will.

Buterin used the quadratic sieve as a reference point, an early 1980s algorithm that accelerated the factoring of large numbers and compromised RSA-style encryption. No comparable shortcut is currently known for ECDLP. Instead, Buterin worries that such a shortcut exists and that AI will uncover it first.
This warning broadens Buterin's recent emphasis on AI security. Last month, he introduced an AI paranoid mode for private conversations and supported an AI model that intentionally reduced its hacking abilities.
The timing also placed the issue at the forefront of Devcon 8, Ethereum's main developer gathering in Mumbai.
During his stage appearance, Buterin combined the yellow mask with a cloak featuring eyes. It ranked among his most peculiar outfits since a dinosaur costume in 2022.
A user on X compared the attire to the Shoggoth meme, an AI-generated picture of a monster concealed behind a harmless-looking mask. The monster symbolizes raw AI models, and the mask signifies the training that makes chatbots appear safe. Buterin has not spoken about his Devcon attire.
Uh @VitalikButerin are you ressed as a Shoggoth?

@VitalikButerin just opened Devcon and set the tone for the week. A formally verified OS, open silicon, self-sovereign healthtech, free discourse, private communication, trustworthy AI — these are all part of Ethereum's mission.

In his Devcon 8 keynote, Buterin linked Ethereum's mission to six objectives, according to the Ethereum Foundation (EF). These span from a formally verified operating system and open silicon to self-sovereign health technology and trustworthy AI. Free discourse and private communication were also included.
We need to be able to trust our operating systems. We need to be able to trust our hardware. We need to be able to trust the things that are most relevant to our health.

Ethereum now boasts over 1 million developers throughout its history. Devcon 8 continues until November 6, and Buterin's caution adds artificial intelligence to the dangers confronting the network's cryptography.
